Playlist for May 20 – 26, 2024
Quick playlist highlights:
– I have so many thoughts on the new Bring Me The Horizon album. Expect to see a full review next week. I decided to highlight “Limousine” because I talked about it in the “drama” section of a past newsletter. This is the song that Oli posted a clip of and people complained that it sounded exactly like a Moodring song. I still have the same opinion that I had back then – nobody knows who Moodring is and this sound belongs to Deftones so anybody who copies it is copying Deftones. Moodring (61,000 monthly listeners) doesn’t get to rip off Deftones (11.2 million monthly listeners) and then complain that BMTH ripped them off.
– As I Lay Dying just released their first single in three years. It’s their first song since losing three of their longtime members. I’ll cover the drama surrounding this song in a section below. As for the song, it sounds pretty good from a distance, but the lyrics are so bad because it’s a diss track. Overall though, I’m pretty hopeful about the sound/style.
– Attila has a new track featuring Dickie Allen ( Infant Annihilator). It’s a major throwback to the sound they had in 2013 on ‘About That Life.’ Fun and heavy – that’s what Attila is supposed to be about. Still, I can’t help but feel like Fronz is trying to figure out what people want to hear rather than creating music with his own vision in mind.
– Babymetal and Electric Callboy have a new song and it’s a blast. Two incredibly upbeat bands feeding off each other’s energy.
– I still have a hard time adjusting to Within Destruction‘s genre switch from slamming deathcore to…anime inspired metalcore? Honestly, the chorus of this one is great. I’m surprised I’m not being more of a hater this week, but I don’t know, there are so many standard bands these days, I can’t get mad at bands for trying something new.
– Do I need to pay more attention to Capstan? I quickly browsed through their new album and it seemed too soft for my tastes, but there were a couple fun ones. The one I featured here is really good.
– Zeal & Ardor might be gearing up for another album. They had my third favorite album in 2023 so my expectations are super high. It’s tough to judge them based on singles though because you need to hear them explore their sound on a full album to really see the vision.
