Ivory Coast // Nines

Ivory Coast (@ivorycoastband) has released two singles following their 2017 EP titled ‘Achroma’ and their most recent one titled “Nines” is getting me especially excited for their next album. These guys have everything I look for in an upcoming band and it’s impressive how well they pull off so many sounds.

My favorite thing about Ivory Coast is how many of my favorite bands I can hear in their sound. They’ve done a great job of adapting various styles and blending them with their own sound to create a fresh identity out of something that feels familiar. The constantly shifting, bouncy rhythms continually push each song forward, barely allowing any breathing room as the vocalist builds upon each section. Even the choruses are up front and the interruptions by the screams add to the urgency.

Starting with ‘Achroma’, I love that they use a similar style as a band called The Royal. A big part of that is how well their vocals project emotion. From pure rage to a nostalgic longing for life to return to better times, the screams mirror the instrumental atmosphere and that combination resonates really well.

After finishing ‘Achroma’, the band moved onto “Your Failure” which is probably my favorite song they’ve made. Within the first minute I’m reminded of Bad Omens, I See Stars, and Northlane which makes for an awesome combination. I especially like their approach of including lighter instrumentals and then introducing deep grooves to match the contrast between the spirited chorus and the deeper screams.

Lastly, today they released a new song called “Nines”. Even though it has fewer heavy elements, the intensity is still full force and this is where the heartfelt vocals really come into play. Being able to make a song like this is what differentiates Ivory Coast from hundreds of other bands and even though I love their heavy stuff, I really hope they have a couple songs like this on the future album.
