Volumes // Coming Clean

Published by PecksMetalPicks on

Volumes dropped a surprise EP titled ‘Coming Clean’ a few weeks back and I’m really enjoying the direction they’re heading. I was surprised by how much I liked ‘Different Animals’ in 2017 and this is exactly what I expected from a follow up.

I just have to say that Volumes recruiting Myke Terry in 2016 was one of the best moves I’ve ever seen a band make.  He elevates their sound and is the single reason they might still be considered a great band.  His choruses are unbelievably catchy and he matches the tone of each song perfectly with his heartfelt, self-reflective cleans.

It’s not a coincidence that “Until The End”, which has Myke Terry doing most of the vocals, is my favorite track.  He contributes a decent amount of the screams too, making him one of the more versatile vocalists in the scene.  Newer fans may not realize he was a talented screamer in Bury Your Dead and performed at Mitch Lucker’s memorial show so I want to point out that he’s been a long standing part of the metalcore community.

“No Love” is a more standard song featuring Fronz, but it’s actually a little out of place among the others.  “Hello Goodbye” and “No Love” are more in step with where Volumes seems to be heading and given their current line up I’m way more excited for that than anything else they might pursue.  I’ll still always think ‘Via’ is their best album but at this point it’s so far behind them that I don’t even consider them the same band anymore.

Despite how good ‘Coming Clean’ is, I have one complaint: Gus Farias is, and has always been, a terrible screamer.  He was the weak link when Michael Barr was in the band and he hasn’t gotten any better since Myke Terry joined.  His weak, monotone screams add little to the music and they’re his only contribution.

Even with Gus in the band, Volumes has been killing it and I genuinely look forward to new music from them every time.  They’ve tried lots of new things throughout their career and they still haven’t had a huge misstep so here’s to hoping they keep it up.
