Alpha Wolf // Fault
Alpha Wolf’s new EP titled ‘Fault’ is out now. It’s a good follow up to their recent singles and stays true to the sound they’ve established for themself.
“Sub-Zero” is by far my favorite track because it’s overflowing with anger. Based on the history, I’m assuming it’s aimed at the band’s previous vocalist, Aiden Ellaz, and his new band Dealer, who have also made songs that seem like they’re targeting Alpha Wolf. It’s their most energetic effort by a mile and I wish the others had the same aggression.
I don’t want to talk about Dealer too much because I covered the conflict in my review of ‘Soul Burn’, but it’s hard not to compare the two bands. I actually prefer both bands’ new music over the music Alpha Wolf was making with Aiden so overall it’s a win-win for me as a listener.
In my mind the main hurdle for Alpha Wolf to overcome is being a band that’s defined by their singles. “Black Mamba”, “No Name”, and “Sub-Zero” are all great songs that have catapulted them to new heights, and the new vocalist they have is perfect for them, but it feels like they struggled to make songs that add anything to the EP. A lot of tracks blend together and the EP didn’t have much replay value. The only way I can tell most of them apart is by the one-liner call outs; everything in between feels like filler.
I don’t want to end on a negative note because it is a good EP and I’m only being this critical because Dealer really impressed me with theirs. Alpha Wolf is on Sharptone now so they’ll be fine and I’m guessing this EP was rushed because they knew they had to respond to Dealer’s EP (or maybe this really is their peak). Hopefully Alpha Wolf goes back to the drawing board and figures out what they want to do moving forward because they have the ability to do big things.
