This was an interesting year for heavy music. My top ten, and my list in general, is much more diverse than it has been in previous years. I would sum 2018 up by saying that deathcore and death metal are on the rise, slam is preparing to take over, and, for the most part, metalcore is dead. My list was clearly affected by these genre fluctuations as some bands have adjusted to the current demands of the heavy metal scene better than others.

Over the last year I’ve thought a lot about the current state of the scene and why metalcore is struggling; I will explain everything further in an article for my website. I’ve been stalling the launch of the site because it’s such a massive undertaking, but it’s almost complete and I’ll launch it at the end of January.

Due to the diversity of this list, I almost decided to make multiple lists based on genre. It’s basically impossible to compare Dance Gavin Dance to Mire Lore and then figure out where Deafheaven should fall, but having multiple lists kind of defeats the purpose so just try to think of this list as my best attempt to highlight my favorite albums.
